In honor of Serve-a-thon, Chicago Cares is proud to share stories from the who’s who of our volunteers, philanthropists, and prominent Chicagoans...
With just over a week until Serve-a-thon, we’re excited to feature one of our wonderful Primary Leaders today! Dan Frysinger will be the head honcho at one of our 35 service sites June 7, directing more than 100 volunteers as well as a leader team. Dan is a wonderful friend of Chicago Cares and is also the president of our Auxiliary Board.
1) Why do you serve as a Serve-a-thon Primary Leader?
I serve as a Primary Leader to help enable others to find where they fit best in volunteering and to excel in that place.
2) What’s your most memorable Serve-a-thon moment?
My most memorable Serve-a-thon moment was at Minnie Riperton senior apartments, where elementary-aged children volunteered alongside their parents. The interaction between the residents and the children was like a natural grandparent-grandchild relationship. From serving breakfast to playing checkers with the residents, our young volunteers happily embraced the spirit of service.
3) What does Chicago look like to you? Feel free to share thoughts on Chicago’s personality, opportunities, and/or challenges.
To me, Chicago is a collection of many strong communities that are continuing to learn how to develop themselves and also help each other. It is curious about itself and is innovative in adapting land, buildings, artifacts, and people for its future. Chicago Cares has been my window into neighborhoods across the city. I hope to enable residents and volunteers to further appreciate and develop their communities.
